Children’s Discovery Center’s Week of the Young Child 2022 (April 2 – 8)

As part of a bigger movement to recognize the needs of young children and the importance of early childhood education, Children’s Discovery Center is once again celebrating Week of the Young Child.

Every year, our week-long event includes daily themes that engage all five senses, incorporate movement and explore STEAM activities. Our Reggio Emilia teaching style supports all of these areas for a fun week that encourages children and their families to turn education into a celebration of learning.

Here is our 2022 schedule:

Music Monday

It was American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who said, “Music is the universal language of mankind.”

Through singing, dancing and musical activities, children develop essential language and early literacy skills while also engaging in healthy movement. Truly, music engages both the mind and body in wonderful ways.

During our Music Monday celebration, we will explore various sounds and styles of music while inviting children to participate in a range of fun activities.

Family Engagement: We encourage your family to record your own unique version of a song or write your own. We can’t wait to hear what you create!

Tasty Tuesday

What would a celebration be without tasty snacks to share? Our Tasty Tuesday celebration is more than just cheese and crackers – it’s a cooking activity that connects math, literacy and science skills while also teaching children the importance of healthy eating.

With the rise in childhood obesity, we encourage healthy nutrition and fitness habits both at home and in the classroom. On Tasty Tuesday, we’ll explore what foods are best for our bodies and discover delicious and creative ways to prepare them.

Family Engagement: We encourage you to share your recipes, create your own healthy snacks and post photos for all to see.

Work Together Wednesday

“Good friends build each other up, just like Legos.” – Unknown

When children build together, they incorporate math and science concepts while developing their social and early literacy skills. The great thing is, there are a plethora of building materials and a world of imagination for children to utilize.

On Work Together Wednesday, we invite children to be as creative as possible and come up with their own building creations.

  • A fort made from branches
  • A city made from blocks
  • A hideaway made from pillows

We’ll stretch our imaginations by constructing projects together and building community along the way.

Family Engagement: We encourage you to build something as a family and share pictures of your “together” creation.

Artsy Thursday

It was Pablo Picasso who once said, “Every child is an artist.” We couldn’t agree more!

Through hands-on art projects, children are encouraged to think, problem-solve and create. This Artsy Thursday, we’ll celebrate the joy of arts and crafts while also developing creativity, social skills and fine motor skills.

Using various materials—especially materials found in nature, we will engage in imaginative art projects your children will love.

Family Engagement: We encourage you to use materials you have at home to create art with your children. Remember, “Every child is an artist,” so encourage their creativity and share their artwork with us.

Family Friday

Celebrating families is at the heart of supporting our youngest learners at Children’s Discovery Center. Without dedicated families, our programs wouldn’t exist.

In fact, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) applauds family members’ roles as young children’s first and most important teachers.

This Family Friday, we will celebrate every child’s family as a valuable part of their growth and development.

Family Engagement: We encourage you to share pictures and stories about your family so we can get to know you better. We look forward to applauding your role as the most important teacher your young child will ever have.

And if your child is not yet a part of Children’s Discovery Center, we encourage you to take a look at our enrollment process and connect with us today. Supporting your family through a creative, nurturing and Christian environment is and always will be at the heart of our mission.
