Featured Project: Exploring the African Savannah (Lions)

Toledo preschool program class learning about lions

Many of the most exciting classroom projects begin with an unexpected discovery. For our Pre-K A students, this exploration all began when learning about penguins during a study of Arctic animals. When our children discovered that some penguins live in Africa, their curiosity took flight.

Letting Curiosity Lead the Way

Before long, interest in our flightless friends transformed into passionate discussions on other Savannah residents. “What other animals live in Africa? What is Africa like?” These simple questions sparked a grand adventure, uncovering life on the Savannah and all that we can learn from nature.

This interest quickly led the class into a deeper exploration of lions and other African animals that call this unique biome their home. Together, the children began comparing habitats, discussing predators and prey, and learning how different animals survive in very different environments.

Using our Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum, the project has continued to evolve through the children’s ideas, conversations and discoveries.

Exploring Through Art and Play

As the children explored, they used the “100 languages” to express their insights in many ways. If you were to visit Ms. Gabby’s classroom, you might see children:

  • Painting African landscapes and animals
  • Creating clay sculptures inspired by lions
  • Designing patterns based on animal markings
  • Acting out animal behaviors through dramatic play
  • Sharing theories and observations during classroom discussions

Rather than simply memorizing facts, Pre-K A students are actively building their understanding through hands-on exploration and creative expression. Together, we’re making meaningful connections about the world around them.

The “Wow” Factor

According to Ms. Gabby, one of the most exciting parts of this project was “watching the children truly take ownership of their learning through curiosity, exploration and creative expression.”

That sense of ownership is one of the most powerful parts of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. When children feel heard and empowered, learning becomes more meaningful and memorable.

“Once we finish learning about lions, we will continue to learn about more African Savannah predators and pray!”

Learning Together Across Classrooms

Students are not alone in this expedition, either. Another special part of this project has been the collaboration between classrooms. While Pre-K A explored the African Savannah, Pre-K B was simultaneously studying the African Congo rainforest. The classes have enjoyed sharing discoveries and teaching one another about the different habitats, animals and environments.

These shared conversations have helped deepen the children’s understanding while building excitement across both classrooms and our Toledo-area early childhood education center. We can’t wait to see where this student-led safari takes this classroom next!
