Even the tiniest hands can uncover grand discoveries! Our Toddler A classroom (12-25 months) students have been making their mark in their “Mark Making” lesson. This hands-on learning project began in August and is teaching our students healthy ways to make their mark in the world.

Creatively-Inspired Curiosity

This project grew from the children’s growing fascination with art, and we were happy to encourage them. After all, art is more than just fun; it’s foundational! These early artistic explorations help build confidence, coordination and creativity while introducing essential pre-writing skills in a joyful, hands-on way.

At Children’s Discovery Center, we follow the Reggio Emilia philosophy in our Toledo-area early childhood education centers. This means our curriculum is built around what sparks curiosity in each child. The Mark Making project beautifully reflects this approach, with each stroke, scribble and swirl taking on meaning.

By offering a variety of open-ended art materials (paint, markers, textured drawing tools, etc.), children are free to explore how they can express themselves visually and at their own pace.

Our “WOW” Factor

Unlike many of our other featured projects, Toddler A’s “wow” moment is more than an outcome. It’s the process itself! 

Watching children concentrate as they grip paintbrushes and crayons, noticing how colors combine and change, or experimenting with creative self-expression, has been an extraordinary glimpse into students’ unique perspectives. 

For us grown-ups, it has also served as a welcome reminder to open our eyes to the beauty all around us.

Our Curiosity Keeps Growing

As we explore more about our artistic sides, “Mark Making” is just the beginning for Toddler A students. This ongoing project continues to evolve alongside the children, naturally connecting to future art-based and storytelling explorations in the classroom. We cannot wait to see where our students’ creativity takes us next!
