At Children’s Discovery Center, we believe the most exciting learning happens when children’s natural curiosity is sparked. Our Preschool B class’ project, “Exploring the Ocean & Sea,” was a testament to this. Led by the incredible Ms. Lem, this hands-on project has been a beautiful example of how play, curiosity and inquiry drive meaningful learning experiences in early education centers.
Diving Into Discovery
This project began in January when preschool students played with ocean-themed toys during free playtime. Their interest was piqued as they noticed the diversity of animals—fish, sharks and whales—and began asking questions like, “How do ocean animals breathe underwater?” and “Why do fish swim in schools?”
This natural wonder sparked an ongoing, months-long exploration of the ocean and its exciting ecosystem.

In line with our Reggio Emilia curriculum, this ocean study was shaped by our children’s interests. The inquiry-based approach has guided the lesson, allowing students to lead the way with questions and curiosity. Through this project, the children have had the opportunity to explore the ocean’s wonders, gaining an understanding and respect for the environment.
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is how it blends STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) with the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach. Hands-on learning and artistic exploration have been driving forces of our young learners’ growth.

Throughout the lesson, children not only learned about marine life but also worked collaboratively with their peers, developed their problem-solving skills and engaged in meaningful creative expression. The combination of hands-on learning and child-led inquiry made this project dynamic and impactful.
The WOW Factor: Toledo Zoo & Aquarium Field Trip
A key highlight of this project was our field trip to the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium. This visit allowed us to study the animals and environments our children had been so interested in up close and personal. The special opportunity brought the project to life and was an unforgettable experience for both the children and their families

Up Next for Preschool B
The project may be winding down, but the lessons learned will continue to inspire us. As with all projects at Children’s Discovery Center, the goal is not just to impart knowledge but to help children develop the skills they need to continue exploring and learning long after the project ends. Through this project, they have learned about the world, their place in it and how to work together to explore new ideas.
