Create Calm with These Mindfulness Techniques for Preschoolers and Parents

Early childhood educators and child enjoying a mindful moment together

In a world full of color, sound and constant movement, even our youngest learners need moments of stillness. At Children’s Discovery Center, we know that mindfulness (the simple practice of noticing the present moment) can bring peace and focus to busy little minds and big hearts alike.

So, let’s take a moment to pause, breathe and connect with what’s happening right now. When practiced with playfulness and care, mindfulness becomes a powerful tool for nurturing curiosity and calm. This blog will help your family on this path to peace.

Tiny Moments, Big Benefits

Mindfulness has been shown to profoundly support early childhood development. Research links mindful activities to improved attention, emotional regulation and empathy. For young children, this means fewer meltdowns, smoother transitions and stronger self-awareness.

In our classrooms, we see it daily: a child takes a deep breath before sharing a toy; another pauses to listen carefully to the sound of a rainstick. These small moments of calm help children build the self-regulation skills they’ll carry for life.

And the benefits aren’t just for children. When parents practice mindfulness, they model patience, compassion and emotional steadiness, qualities that help build healthy family routines and relationships.

At CDC, mindfulness fits naturally within our Reggio Emilia learning style. Just as we encourage exploration through STEAM learning, mindfulness invites exploration of thoughts, feelings and sensations.

Mindful Moments Are Learning Moments

Mindfulness complements the Reggio Emilia approach because both see learning as an active, self-guided process. Mindfulness deepens this experience by teaching children awareness to reveal the world around them and within them.

When teachers model calm presence and encourage reflection, children begin to mirror that same sense of awareness. They learn that slowing down helps them understand more deeply and that paying attention can feel good.

Calm Can Be Fun, Too

Mindfulness doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be woven into everyday play and routine with creativity and warmth. Want to integrate mindfulness time at home? These  simple, age-appropriate techniques are a great place to start:

  1. Teddy Bear Breathing: Have your child lie down and place a small stuffed animal on their belly. As they take slow breaths in and out, they can watch their teddy “ride the waves.” This gentle visualization teaches awareness of the body and the calming rhythm of breath. This animated how-to video can help your family learn the process.
  1. Mindful Listening: Ring a soft bell or chime and invite your child to listen carefully until the sound fades away. You can then ask, “What do you hear now?” This exercise strengthens focus and quiet observation.
  1. Nature Walks: Go on a “noticing walk” together. Encourage your child to describe what they see, hear or feel: the crunch of leaves, the warmth of sunlight or the smell of rain. This practice teaches mindfulness through the senses and nurtures appreciation for nature’s details.
  1. Feelings Check-In: Ask your child to describe their feelings using colors or weather: “I feel sunny!” or “I’m a little stormy today.” This playful metaphor helps them name emotions and feel safe expressing them.

When Parents Practice, Children Thrive

Calm begins with the grown-ups. Children naturally mirror the emotions of the adults around them, which means that when parents model mindfulness, little ones learn to follow.

Try taking a few deep breaths together before bedtime, or pausing for a “quiet minute” before a meal. Even small rituals, like sharing one thing you’re grateful for at the end of the day, can create meaningful moments of connection.

Most importantly, celebrate curiosity and calm equally. Remind children that all feelings are welcome and that slowing down to notice those feelings is part of learning and growing.
